History: The First Jeep” tells the story of the American Bantam Car
Company, which dared to meet the challenge to build a prototype
combination light weapons carrier and command and reconnaissance
vehicle for the an unprepared United States Army in the summer and
early fall of 1940 in the impossible timeframe of 49 days. The
deliverable of “¼ ton truck 4×4 light project,” as the effort was
titled by the Army, later became known as the Jeep. This effort
